CooperVision Hosts Student Leadership Summit on World Optometry Day

CooperVision continues to support the next generation of optometrists through meaningful academic programs. This year’s Student Leadership Society Summit, part of the CooperVision® Student Contact Lens Leadership Society, and Myopia Leadership Society, brought top optometry students together for an immersive experience focused on leadership, innovation, and professional development.

On World Optometry Day, March 23, 2025, nearly 50 students from 26 schools and colleges of optometry schools across the United States and Canada gathered at CooperVision's headquarters in Victor, New York.

Optometry Students Learn Clinical Skills and Insights on Career Paths

This event offered a unique opportunity for students to enhance their knowledge base, and skill sets through educational programming and hands-on contact lens workshops. Additionally, participants engaged in various sessions that provided valuable insights into preparing for graduation and starting their career as an optometrist.

The summit also provided attendees the opportunity to network with fellow contact lens and myopia enthusiasts.

A Behind the Scenes Look at CooperVision’s Manufacturing

A highlight of the summit was the behind-the-scenes tours of CooperVision's manufacturing and distribution facilities in Scottsville, NY and West Henrietta, NY, respectively. Students witnessed the intricate process of how contact lenses are made, packaged, and delivered, gaining a deeper understanding of the industry's operational aspects. “It was really exciting just to take in all the information about all the different products CooperVision offers, and the wide range of parameters*1 for patients that they’re able to help us treat,” said Rachel Mills during Sunday’s event.

CooperVision’s Steadfast Commitment to Students

Tara Vaz, OD FAAO, Senior Manager, Professional and Academic Affairs, emphasized the company's commitment to supporting the next generation of optometrists. "The Student Leadership Society program and summit provide invaluable education, networking, and resources. Our goal is to empower these future leaders to enrich their campus communities and advance the optometry profession," she stated.

The benefits to students are immense, from gaining in-depth knowledge of contact lens technology to enhancing their resumes with a prestigious program. Networking opportunities allowed students to connect with their peers and industry professionals, building relationships that will support their careers long after graduation.

Optometry Students Gain Networking Experience

In addition to the educational summit, student leadership society members receive a grant to attend the American Academy of Optometry (AAO) annual meeting, and networking opportunities to learn from their peers and industry leaders. "It's been great so far," said Holly Sallee, student at Indiana University School of Optometry. "I've really had the opportunity to meet a lot of amazing doctors along with build relationships with the fellow optometry students that are soon going to be my colleagues."

CooperVision is dedicated to advancing the field of optometry and its future leaders through these and other initiatives. By participating in these programs, students not only gain valuable knowledge and skills but also join a community of like-minded individuals dedicated to advancing the field of optometry. Incredible opportunities like this summit help shape our future leaders and make a lasting impact in optometry.
