Aquaform® Technology: Unique Science Behind Real World Results

From the literature to the exam room, eye care professionals are keenly aware that contact lens comfort is vital in a patient’s wearing success.1,2

Along this vein, manufacturers have invested significantly in material science approaches that address comfort and help maximize the potential for patients to thrive as contact lens wearers.

Of course, comfort is just one piece of the wearing-success puzzle. One historical challenge with any silicone hydrogel contact lens material has been finding the right balance between moisture content, oxygen transmissibility and modulus.3 CooperVision overcame this challenge by pioneering Aquaform® Technology, which has a unique set of structures that are integrated throughout the lens material.

In a recent white paper, Dr. Jennifer Palombi, Director of Professional Education and Development for the Americas at CooperVision, details the material science behind Aquaform® Technology found in the Biofinity® and MyDay® families of lenses, in addition to how Aquaform® Technology performs in delivering comfort in the real world.

This article includes a snapshot of the paper.

The Science Behind Aquaform® Technology

Aquaform® Technology is an innovative material technology that hydrates contact lenses to twice their weight in water for natural wettability.4  Additionally, Aquaform® Technology provides incredible all-day comfort 5 and retains water from core to surface without the need for surface coatings or wetting agents in the lens material.

Further, Aquaform® Technology creates a naturally hydrophilic silicone hydrogel lens.4 The natural wettability of Aquaform® Technology can help eyes feel less dry, even during times of reduced blinking, such as when looking at a digital screen.4

Strength Behind the Design

Aquaform® Technology uses a matrix of long silicone chains with hydrogen bonds to lock water molecules in the lens for incredible, long-lasting comfort and clarity.

These long chains mean that less silicone is needed to achieve the oxygen transmissibility necessary to help keep eyes clear, white, and healthy in a lens that is soft4 and flexible4 for enhanced comfort and fitting versatility.4

Material Science that Delivers Meaningful Comfort Results in the Real World

Today, more than 25 million wearers experience great vision and incredible comfort thanks to Aquaform® Technology.5 Delving into patient and prescribing ECP experiences, subjective performance has been evaluated in numerous surveys that included ECPs as well as Biofinity® and MyDay® contact lens wearers.

Online surveys of 1,027 Biofinity® contact lens wearers and 376 prescribing ECPs found:

  • Nearly 9 out of 10 wearers are satisfied with the comfort of Biofinity® lenses after 4 weeks of daily wear.*6
  • Patients rated Biofinity Energys® 9 out of 10 for overall comfort.7
  • More subjects rated comfort throughout the day as much better or better with Biofinity® toric vs. their habitual lenses after one month of wear.†8

In a separate, multi-national online survey that polled patients and ECPs on their perception of MyDay® lenses:

  •  93% of ECPs reported that they believe their patients appreciate the extraordinary comfort with MyDay® at the end of a long, demanding day.9
  • More than half of MyDay® wearers agree that by end of day, they forget they are even wearing contact lenses.10
  • Contact lens wearers rated MyDay Energys® more comfortable than their habitual contact lenses.‡11
